The Moroccan ambassador and permanent representative at the UN, Mr el Mostapha Sahel called on Monday the international community to send “a strong support signal” to the ongoing process of negotiations to protect it, and make use of the dynamic engaged by the Moroccan autonomy initiative.

“The kingdom of Morocco appeals to members of the UN to engage a strong political signal of support to the negotiations in order to protect their chances of success, and inscribe the action of the 4th commission in the track of efforts successfully made, by the security council” declared Mr sahel before this commission of the general assembly of the UN.

The Sahara case is today “as new as promising”, it is drawn by resolution1754, adopted unanimously on the 30th of last April, by which the Security Council “installed a new political process of negotiations, putting an end to the precedent initiatives, and consequently, to the impasse which lasted since 2003”

“At this stage, it is imperative that the process engaged is protected, maintained, and consolidated, this can not be obtained without the support of the international community” revealed Mr Sahel.

Mr Sahel , recalled Morocco’s long struggle to  recover  its territorial integrity, underlying that this process would have been completely achieved “if foreign interference, motivated by hegemonic ambitions  which  hypothecated  the building of Maghreb did not occur”

In spite of this long search, which gave priority to the negotiation tool with the former colonial powers , the Kingdom of Morocco, he indicated,   requested the mediation of the UN, and did not, ever since stop showing its cooperation, to reach a final settlement of the conflict

This proposal aims at reaching a compromise and responsible solution, to the profit of all inhabitants of the region, noting that efforts made have been greeted by the Security Council being “serious and credible”

Morocco equally exults that the process supported by resolution 1754 found its way to practice, through the holding of rounds of negotiations from June to august 2007, under the auspices of the secretary general of the UN.

The Moroccan diplomat added that Morocco notes with satisfaction that the consequential negotiations to resolution1754 have repaired an injustice, which was done to the majority of the population of the Sahara .this majority sees from now on the restoration of its lawful rights to take part through their representatives, at the negotiations concerning the future of the region.

In this framework, the examination of the Sahara issue by the 4th commission should be done in a spirit of “consensus, and responsibility, and never give in to the unproductive polemic, escalation, and useless outbidding, which unfortunately alter the objectivity of the debate” added the Moroccan diplomat.

Mr Sahel finally underlined the Moroccan readiness to act for the adoption of a text of consensus in a complete phase with resolution1754, and in support of the dynamic of the negotiations whish started at Manhasset, and which should carry on during the coming months.
