Cape Verde "very solemnly" supports the Moroccanness of the Sahara and backs the autonomy plan as the only basis for resolving this regional dispute while respecting the territorial integrity and national unity of the Kingdom of Morocco, said Cape Verde's minister of Foreign Affairs, Communities and Defence, Luis Felipe Tavares, Friday in Rabat.

Speaking at a press briefing following his talks with minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, the Cape Verdean minister said with "sincerity" that his country is ready to work with "responsibility and credibility" to ensure that this regional dispute can be resolved under the best possible conditions as part of the United Nations' important efforts.

In addition, Tavares said he is very proud to be in Morocco to witness and appreciate, through his trip from Tangier to Rabat on board the "Al Boraq" high-speed train, the quality of Morocco's infrastructure and the Kingdom's determination to be on the right path towards development.

In this regard, the Cape Verdean official said that Morocco "is fortunate to have King Mohammed VI, a visionary Sovereign, who has the will to transform his country, who knows the world very well and who has understood Africa", as reflected in Morocco's Constitution, which includes South-South cooperation in its text.

In addition, Tavares noted, "as minister of Foreign Affairs but also minister of Defence", that Morocco is a natural candidate to become a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

"Cape Verde has always supported this request made in a natural way," he stressed, noting that the Moroccan economy, which has a growth rate that is "interesting enough" if not "powerful", can make a significant contribution to the sub-region.

For his part, Bourita said that Morocco had noted that, since Cape Verde's decision to withdraw its recognition of the so-called "SADR" in 2007, relations had undergone very significant changes, contacts were regular and Cape Verde's positions and support for Morocco in regional and international forums are also constant.

On this occasion, Bourita expressed his thanks to the Cape Verdean authorities for this clear and consistent stance.

"Cape Verde is a neighbouring and brotherly country. We have common maritime borders, but above all a cultural heritage, a continental and sub-regional belonging that is West Africa and a broad convergence of views on regional and international issues," he pointed out.
