Morocco maintains its request of a credible and objective census of Moroccan nationals detained in the Tindouf camps, and formulates its request to the high refugee commission to elaborate a report dealing with this issue, identifying obstacles, responsibilities, and indicating perspectives of implementing such census, asserts the ambassador representative of the kingdom of Morocco at the UN office in Geneva Mr Mohamed Loulichki

In his speech  before the 58th session of the executive comity of the High commission of refugees which opened Monday at the palais des nations in Geneva Mr Loulichki added that Morocco, which remained worried because of the precarious situation of the Moroccan nationals detained in Tindouf camps, deprived for the last three decades of their basic rights, did not spare any efforts asking the HCR to put an end  to this anachronistic situation, allowing these populations to benefit from the appropriate assistance, and be able  to make their free choice of return.

Since 1975 Morocco asks for a viable and credible census of the population at Tindouf camps, and since this date the Algerian government has systematically refused to allow such census, he revealed.

An  obligation  that  the Algerian state should accomplished being  part of the 1951 convention  vis a  vis the HCR, and the international community and vis a vis populations of the camps , and their families living in Morocco  . These are Moroccan, and donor countries demands in terms of humanitarian assistance, and a precondition to determine the bulk of humanitarian assistance to be provided by the HCR, donor states, and the NGOs, in order to put an end to its misuse, he maintained.

The Moroccan diplomat made it clear that “several HCR appeals to conduct a census of the population living in Tindouf camps were always faced with the Algerian refusal” he added that “the Algerian refusal to go ahead with the census, or authorise the HCR to carry out its mandate have no other explanations but the willingness of those in charge of this country to use the suffering of the populations to stop any possibility of a solution”.
