The Spanish foreign affairs and cooperation minister Mr Miguel Angel Moratinos, indicated last Friday at New York that his country is convinced that the ongoing negotiations concerning the Sahara, will reach an agreement.

“Spain is convinced that with the help of the personal envoy of the UN secretary general, and the support of friendly countries, all parties will go forward, and direct on going negotiations will reach an agreement” asserted the chief of the Spanish diplomacy in a speech before the UN general assembly.

Mr Moratinos, who reminded that the Sahara conflict “is one of the main obstacles in the process of integration of the Maghreb Arab Union”, reaffirmed his country’s engagement for a political solution to this question.

“We are actively engaged in the search of a just and lasting political agreement, an agreement which respects the principle of self-determination, within the framework of the UN.” He added Morocco presented last April an initiative for negotiating an autonomy statute for the Sahara region, as a result of substantial consultations at the national and international levels, such initiative was greeted by the UN security council being “serious” and” credible”.

Two rounds of negotiations about the Sahara issue have taken place, during last June and august at Manhasset near New York City, under the auspices of the UN .
