The Moroccan conservative Istiqlal party has won the biggest number in the 325 seat house of representatives following Friday’s legislative elections. Although the percentage of participation was around 37 % at the national level ,it is worth mentioning that the  degree of participation  particularly in the southern region of Morocco has known an outright  increase,

In fact it has reached 62 % in the area of OUED EDDAHB-LAGOUIRA, 58 % in the region of GUELMIM-SMARA, and around 50 % in the area of LAAYOUNE-BOUJDOUR.

It is indeed, according to the home office minister Mr Chakib Benmoussa” the highest percentage of participation compared with other regions of the country”.

There is no doubt that the election process confirms the progress achieved in Morocco, in building a democratic society; the international observers who monitored Friday’s elections said they witnessed no “violations cases” nor “corruption practices” during the polling process. One of the international observers in the GUELMIM-ESMARA area made it clear to the Moroccan channel one TV by saying that the elections were “very good, or even excellent “.

The highest participation in these elections took place in the southern part of Morocco this participation reflects not only the extent of attachment of Sahraouis to their homeland, but also their willingness to take part heavily in such democratic legislative elections.

The message was crystal clear, from the inhabitants of the Moroccan Sahara to the international community, and also to the leadership of the front of Polisario: the majority of sahraouis made it clear through these elections about their attachment to the Kingdom of Morocco, and their total refusal of any attempt to create obstacles as to the application of the Moroccan proposal concerning a substantial autonomy in the Sahara .
