The populations of the southern provinces have given a citizenship lesson in the recent municipal and regional elections,  said Sunday in Geneva the president of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami.

Speaking at the 133rd meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Mr. Alami emphasized that "the Saharawi citizens were quick to reiterate their commitment to the Moroccan Sahara by a massive turnout of 4 September" .

From the tribune of the IPU, the President of the House of Representatives said that in a spirit of openness and realism, Morocco has put on the table a wide autonomy initiative for a final settlement of the Sahara issue.

"Those who are not aware of the territorial integrity of the Kingdom are asked first to have all the data and be sufficiently informed about this issue," he noted.

The rate of participation in regional and municipal elections held on 4 September, stood at about 80% in some southern provinces, an illustration of the attachment of the overwhelming majority of the people to national unity and the process of ongoing reforms.

This session was attended by the Ambassador Permanent Representative of Morocco to the UN in Geneva, Mohamed Aujjar. The delegation from the Moroccan Parliament, led by Mr. Talbi Alami, includes members of Justice and Development Party (PJD), Istiqlal Party (PI), National Rally of Independents (RNI), Authenticity and Modernity Party ( WFP) and the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP).

The discussions which were attended by delegations from 130 countries, are focused on the issue of immigration, fight against terrorism and the protection of cultural heritage.
