The position of Côte d'Ivoire on the Moroccan Sahara issue remains unchanged for decades, said the president of the Ivorian National Assembly (Parliament), Guillaume Soro.

"Our position is and will remain the same. We support the position of the Kingdom of Morocco in the conflict with the Polisario Front over the Moroccan Sahara issue, '' he told MAP on the sidelines of the friendship and work visit of HM King Mohammed VI to Ivory Coast.

"We believe that this region is part of the Kingdom of Morocco, which has been the southern provinces, '' he said, adding that Côte d'Ivoire encourages direct dialogue between protagonists as a useful approach in this crisis. "

In this context, he continued, "we support discussions started over two years in the suburbs of New York between Morocco and Polisario to determine the conditions for the exercise of full sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco in this region in the context of a system of broad autonomy.''

Ivorian president, Alassane Ouattara reiterated during his official visit January 20-21 in Morocco, '' strong support '' from Côte d'Ivoire to the Moroccan proposal to grant broad autonomy to the Sahara region within the framework of the Kingdom's sovereignty.
