The UN Security Council extended, on Tuesday, for one year the mandate of the MINURSO until April 30, 2015 and reiterated its call on Algiers to take a census for the populations of the camps of Tindouf in Algeria.

In its resolution 2152, unanimously adopted by the fifteen member states, the UNSC urged the parties and neighboring countries to fully cooperate with the UN body and with each other and get resolutely involved to put an end to the current deadlock and move forward towards a political solution.

Reaching a political solution to the long-running dispute and a reinforced cooperation between the member states of the Arab Maghreb Union will contribute to the stability and security in the Sahel region, said the resolution.

The UNSC also reaffirmed the credibility and seriousness of the Moroccan proposal, submitted on April 2007 to the UNSG, and commended the serious and credible Moroccan efforts to move the process forward towards a settlement.

It also reiterated its demand to consider a census for the Tindouf camps refugees in Algeria and called for further efforts in this area.

The UNSC hailed the commitment by the parties to continue the negotiation process as part of the UN-brokered talks, lauded the fact that the parties are committed to continuing the process in the prospect of a 5th set of talks and recalled the recommendation laid in the report dated April 14, 2008, which says that it is necessary that the parties show realism and a spirit of compromise to made headway with the negotiations.

According to the said resolution, the Council called on the parties to continue to show political will and work in an atmosphere propitious for dialogue to engage in more substantive negotiations and ensure the implementation of its resolutions since 2007 as well as the success of the talk.
