The chairwoman of the Foreign Affairs Committee at the House of Representatives of the US Congress, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, criticized "lack of progress" in the process of UN negotiations to settle the Sahara issue and expressed "concerns" over this case.

"The United Nations protracted negotiations to find a solution to the Sahara conflict have failed to produce substantial progress, even as the situation becomes increasingly precarious in the Tindouf camps where some activities are likely to lead instability in the region, "said Ros-Lehtinen, in a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

In this document, Ros-Lehtinen called for "further actions" that the U.S. can take to encourage the UN to end the impasse, resolve the issue of residents of the camps and reduce the costs of UN activities linked to the Sahara issue.

The purpose of this step, she insisted, is "to achieve a just, equitable and lasting solution to this conflict, which is the essence of the autonomy proposal in the Sahara, under Moroccan sovereignty, which aims to promote regional integration and protect the interests of the United States in the region.
