The EU encourages all parties involved in the Sahara issue to work towards finding a lasting political solution to this regional dispute by showing sense of realism.

In the final declaration following the works of the 10th Session of the Morocco-EU Association held Monday in Luxembourg, the EU encourages all parties to continue working with the personal envoy of UN Secretary General to progress in finding a solution, with realism and a spirit of compromise.

Morocco and the EU two main partners

The EU reaffirms its commitment to resolve the Sahara conflict and expresses its full support to the efforts of UN Secretary General and his Personal Envoy to help the parties reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution.

It expresses also its commitment to respect human rights and recalls the obligations of each party, while appreciating, the constitutionalization of the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) and the increased role in monitoring defending human rights, including in the Sahara.

For its part, Morocco emphasizes that the Security Council has established since 2007, the parameters for the settlement of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, including the rule of the Moroccan autonomy initiative, the centrality of negotiation as the only way out to resolve this conflict, the importance of full cooperation of the parties and all States in the region as well as the imperative of realism and spirit of compromise to make progress in negotiations.

In addition, Morocco notes that the changes in the Arab world, the rapprochement between Rabat and Algiers and the will to revive the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) should be used to move forward to seeking a political solution desired and encouraged by the international community.

in this context, it calls on Algeria to allow the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to carry out the identification and registration of people in the Tindouf camps, in accordance with the Geneva Convention 1951 and its Protocol, and resolution 1979 (2011) of the Security Council.
