The Moroccan autonomy proposal for the Sahara is "consistent" with the norms of international law, said Thursday in Rabat, the Director of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University Complutense of Madrid, Mr. Juan Marccos.

"After the scientific study on the Moroccan proposal, we concluded that the autonomy proposal is consistent with the standards of international law," said Marccos, in a statement to the press after talks with the chairman of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS), Mr. Khalihenna Ould Errachid.

Mr. Marccos, member of a delegation of experts in international law on a working visit to Morocco, stressed that the autonomy initiative proposed by the Kingdom is the "best solution" to settle the Sahara issue.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Maouelainin Benkhalihenna Maouelainin, Secretary General of the Council and Mr. Ahmed Mguizlat Corcas member.

These experts and researchers, representing universities and research centers in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, France, Switzerland and Spain, have recently taken part in Dakhla in the seminar on the "dimension of democracy and human rights in the Moroccan initiative to negotiate autonomy for the Sahara region."
