The unilateral statement released by Algeria at the end of the association council is offensive and hostile towards Morocco , commenting on this issue Mr Menour Alem , the Moroccan ambassador to the European union said Algeria made a step forward in its hostility towards Morocco by asking , to no avail , the European union to support the extension of the mandate of the United nations mission to the Sahara ( MINURSO) and boycott agreements and contracts to exploit the Moroccan Sahara’s natural resources .
This development, he went on to say , belies the “ observer country” status Algeria claims to have and proves to be a party to this dispute, which it fuels since decades now .
He deplored that the Arab Maghreb Union ( AMU) is also subject to this intensification , as Algiers reiterated its outdated discourse tying the Maghreb integration to the settlement of the Moroccan Sahara issue .
This he said, comes despite calls made by the European Union on Algeria and other Maghreb state members to redouble efforts to revitalize inter- Maghreb cooperation.
Alem insisted that Algeria has no moral authority to give lessons to Morocco, particularly when it comes to human rights taking into account human rights abuses on its territory, in Tindouf camps.
In this respect , he noted that the European union’s officially voiced its concern about the humanitarian aspects of the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara , underlining particularly the harsh living conditions undergone by the population in the refugee camps .
The Moroccan ambassador added that the statement made by the Algerian foreign minister on an alleged convergence of positions between his country and the European union over the Sahara issue is surprising and raises questions given that they are aimed at distorting the EU’s official position over the Sahara issue aiming at misleading the international community
