A delegation of Moroccan Sahrawis representing civil society delivered this weekend in Bergamo (Northern Italy), poignant testimony about the reality of the so-called issue of the Sahara and the atrocities committed by Polisario against anyone who tries to thwart their nefarious objectives or claim the most elementary rights.

In their remarks during a seminar on the Sahara issue, members of the Delegation, through their own experiences, exposed in details the manipulation of Polisario by the rulers of Algiers and their "bloodthirsty and harmful nature.

Mr Ghallaoui Sidati, former Polisario representative to Italy, Lahcen Mahraoui, university professor, member of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS), and Ms. Saadani Maa Alainine, community actor and human rights activist, CORCAS member,  excited by their testimonies the large audience consisting of elected representatives, MEPs, trade unionists and academics, who could not hold their emotion while listening to the harsh speeches and the atrocity of the stories.

In addition to the historical ties that have always existed between Morocco and the Sahara, the statements made by members of the delegation during the seminar held under the theme: "Conflict in the Sahara: Past, Present and Future Prospects", permits to shed light on the genesis of the creation of the Polisario at the time of Spanish colonization. They also informed assistance on dramas experienced by the populations sequestered in Tindouf camps and the role played by Polisario in the service of hegemonic goals unrelated to any alleged “Sahrawi cause”.

The Delegation tackled the horrors endured by these people and the torture inflicted on those who dare rise against the dire poverty they live at a time when Polisario leaders, with the blessing of their guards, are getting richer, in full view of everyone, by performing systematic diversion of humanitarian aid.

The Delegation members also focussed on family tragedies generated by the forced deportation of children and the fate of resisting people who suffer the worst torture in Rachid prison.

The Delegation stressed that in contrast to this appalling situation, residents of the southern provinces enjoy peace, serenity and prosperity and enjoy, like their compatriots in the other regions, freedom of movement and expression.

Members of the Delegation hoped for an end to Polisario impunity and that pressure would be exerted on them and on their protectors for the lifting of the siege on the camp so that hostages can return to homeland, Morocco, and enjoy freedom and democracy.

In this regard, they mentioned the return of many Polisario former leaders to the motherland after realizing the enormity of the deception fueled by Algeria, as well as the massive and successive return of the inhabitants in Tindouf camps who risked their lives, braving all dangers and obstacles to return to their country with their families and loved ones.

The Delegation highlighted the relevance of the autonomy project under Moroccan sovereignty proposed by the Kingdom as part of settlement of the Sahara issue, recalling that the resolutions adopted by the UN acknowledged the serious and credible content of the plan.

In this context, it denounced the blockade imposed by Algeria to any prospect of settlement camping on a fixed and outdated position, by manipulating a band of separatists who have no will but the one dictated to them by their protectors .

Authentic documents, testimonies and correspondence establishing historical foundations of the Moroccan Sahara from the 17th century were presented at the seminar by Mr Lahcen Mahraoui.

He, likewise, showed letters from Sahrawi tribal leaders expressed to their Moroccan sultans.

Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, he said, was reinforced through treaties and conventions signed between Morocco and foreign powers that used to request from Sultans to protect their citizens' activities in the Sahara.

Mr. Mahraoui also mentioned testimonies and quotes from major foreign political figures of different nationalities, including French, German and English, proving that the Sahara is Moroccan, dating from the period of the 17th century to the Protectorate.

The delegation of Sahrawi Moroccans held Friday in Florence (Central Italy), a meeting with senior officials from the region of Tuscany (center) during which its members highlighted the reality of the case known as the Sahara and the relevance of the proposed autonomy proposed by Morocco.

This meeting took place in the presence of Ms. Maria Dina Tozzi, head of international operations at the regional level, who had been delegated by the President of the Region, Enrico Rossi.
