The chairman of the Commission of Foreign Affairs, Defence and Armed Forces in the French Senate, Mr. Serge Vinçon, affirmed that the efforts made by Morocco by presenting an initiative for negotiating an autonomy statute of the Sahara region have allowed to a way out to the situation.

“ after many years, I witness with great satisfaction that the situation was largely eased thanks to the efforts deployed by your country which were qualified as serious and credible by the United Nations”, the French senator wrote in a letter sent to the Moroocan ambassador in France Mr. Fathallah Sijilmassi, of which the MAP got a copy.

He also hoped that the unanimous adoption of the 1754 resolution by the UN on the Sahara will allow the coming back to negotiations as soon as possible.

“Our commission which has followed, since the beginning, the negotiations on this painful issue, hopes that the adoption of this resolution will soon allow the coming back to negotiations and to its definite settlement.

According to the initiative for negotiating an autonomy status of the Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty, the region populations should democratically handle, by themselves, their affairs through legislative, executive and legal bodies enjoying special competencies.

In addition, they will possess the financial resources required for the region’s development in all fields and will actively participate in the Kingdom’s economic, social and cultural life.
