Morocco, boosted by total adherence of the population of the Sahara, renews its commitment to the negotiation process as well as its support for the efforts made by the UN Secretary General and his Personal Envoy for the Sahara, Christopher Ross, deputy chairman of Morocco's Royal Consultative Council on Saharan Affairs (CORCAS) said.

Khaddad El Moussaoui told the UN 24 Commission at the regional seminar of the Second International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism (New Caledonia, May 18-20), the Kingdom is committed to reach a negotiated political solution to the Sahara issue on the basis of Morocco’s autonomy Initiative.

He added that Morocco hopes, in accordance with the political guidelines and the clarifications made by the UN resolution 1920, that the political process will go on in serenity and that the other parties will engage in substantive negotiations and give up rigid positions towards peaceful solidarity-based neighbourliness.

With the setting up of the Advisory Committee on Regionalisation last January, Morocco has entered a new phase to promote its institutional set-up towards establishing a national model of advanced regionalization, he said.

He underlined that Algeria bears historical responsibility for the human tragedy that is the result of this conflict, which it has created just after the end of the Spanish rule in the Sahara.

El Moussaoui deplored the fact that Algeria, which formed an armed group, polisario, and continues to host it on its territory, has opted for sacrificing the establishment of a great regional grouping, namely the Arab Maghreb Union, for a hegemonic strategy.

He called on UNHRC to take a headcount of the population detained in the Tindouf camps, in the south west of Algeria, denouncing the embezzlement of a good deal of international humanitarian aid.
