There are promising prospects for Morocco's Sahara autonomy initiative and the UN Security Council members are very confident that this serious project constitutes a definitive and realistic political solution to this artificial conflict, Prime Minister Abbas El Fassi said.

The Premier, who presented Monday at the House of Representatives the results of the government action at the end of its mid-term mandate, said the national cause has witnessed in recent years significant developments that reinforce the position of the Kingdom at the regional and international levels thanks to the broad support garnered by the initiative.

Internationally, obsolete and inapplicable plans are no longer mentioned but rather a political settlement based on negotiations and imbued with the spirit of realism and compromise, he added, noting that the international community is fully aware of Algeria’s clear and direct responsibility in this artificial conflict.

Such attitude, he went on, has a negative impact on bilateral relations and the integration of the Maghreb.

Facing the credibility enjoyed by the Moroccan proposal, the enemies of the territorial integrity of the Kingdom have resorted to the instrumentalization of the human rights issue.

The security council has been aware of these maneuvers and decided, in its resolution 1920, to extend for one year the mandate of MINURSO, strengthen the negotiating process, endorse the resolutions adopted at the last three years and reject all attempts to abort the momentum of the Moroccan initiative of autonomy, through the immoral instrumentalization of the human rights issue, El Fassi said.

The Premier said Morocco has made significant progress in human rights and is an example to follow in transitional justice.

A few isolated cases, or provocations that are part of stratagems known to all, will not in any way divert the attention of the international community to the situation of the population in Tindouf camps, southwestern-Algeria, who suffer all forms of repression, deportation, rape and embezzlement of international humanitarian aid, he said.

In view of this tragedy, Algeria has not allowed the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to take a census of this population or to conduct individual interviews to ensure that the detained population are able to express their legitimate right to return to their homeland, El Fassi underlined.

Despite the military blockade imposed on the population, held in the camps in total denial of their basic rights, dozens of them, especially young people, have fled the camps and returned to their homeland after making sure that the separatist thesis is doomed to failure, he said.

The Premier underscored the fragility of the separatist thesis on regional and international scenes, which is reflected in the stance of several African countries and international organizations such as the Non-Aligned Movement.

Morocco, government, parliament, political parties, trade unions, civil society and all parts of society are called upon to show greater vigilance and step up efforts at diplomatic, official and popular levels, to counter the hackneyed thesis of the enemies of Morocco’s territorial integrity.
