Colombia commended Morocco's political will to find a compromise solution to the Sahara issue based on realism, a Moroccan-Colombian joint statement said on Monday.

In the document released following a press conference of Moroccan Foreign Minister Taib Fassi Fihri and his Colombian peer Jaime Bermudez Merizalde, the visiting official reaffirmed "his country's support to the efforts made within the framework of the United Nations and under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to find a final, mutually acceptable political solution" to this issue.

Bermudez Merizalde, on a working visit to Morocco until April 27, conveyed to Fassi Fihri "a message of friendship and esteem of the Colombian government and its admiration to the efforts made by Morocco, under the leadership of HM king Mohammed VI, in favour of peace and international solidarity.”

The Colombian official also welcomed the initiatives and reforms of HM the king in the political, economic and social areas.

For his part, Fassi Fihri “reaffirmed Morocco’s support to the efforts undertaken by the government of President Alvaro Uribe Velez in terms of security, democracy and social integration,” according to the statement.

He also welcomed the initiatives taken by the Colombian government to fight terrorism and the organized crime, and to seek a negotiated solution to promote a firm and lasting peace in Colombia.

The two ministers agreed to hold the second meeting of the Moroccan-Colombian Joint Commission during the first quarter of 2011 in Morocco, the document said.

“Both parties emphasized the need to promote the peace process in the Middle East on the basis of the creation of an independent Palestinian state that can enjoy the right to live in harmony with its neighbors in accordance with the principles of international law and the support of the international community,” the statement added.

Earlier in the day, Jaime Bermudez Merizalde met with several Moroccan officials, including Speaker of the House of Advisors Mohamed Cheikh Biadillah, State Minister Mohamed El Yazghi, Foreign Trade Minister Abdellatif Maazouz,  and Tourism Minister Yassir  Zenagui.
