Morocco endeavours to bring about all the conditions of stability and development in its southern provinces, said, on Tuesday in the southern city of Dakhla, Morocco's Minister of the Interior.

"The state of instability that threatens security and stability in the Sahel region requires more vigilance and measures in order to protect the region from organized crime and terrorism", Chakib Benmoussa said at a meeting with local representatives of the Oued-Eddahab-Lagouira region.

On the strategic location of the city of Dakhla, the minister underlined the need for securing the city from all criminal, terrorist and smuggling networks.

Authorities are determined to continue to fight all the activities that undermine peace, he said, adding that Morocco is embarking on a process aimed at strengthening the rule of law and respect for human rights.

It's not acceptable that some parties, who are known for their hostility towards Morocco's territorial integrity, exploit freedom and openness prevailing in the Southern provinces to threaten Morocco's historical achievements, Benmoussa said.

The minister noted that his visit to the region came upon H.M. the King's instructions, with the aim of enquiring about the political, security, economic and social situation in the region and about the population's expectations.

Benmoussa said that various urban development projects worth 300 million Dirhams are scheduled in Dakhla over 2009-2012, adding that efforts should be made by all to ensure success of the projects under way, notably the construction of a new tourist zone and a new port in Dakhla.

"Morocco will pursue efforts towards reaching a consensual and a political solution to the Sahara issue, under its national sovereignty and territorial integrity," he added.
