Morocco's permanent representative to the UN, Mohamed Loulichki, said, here Friday, that the Moroccan proposal to grant autonomy to its southern provinces, the Sahara, is a turning point in the process of seeking a political solution to the Sahara issue.

"This initiative is described as serious and credible by the Secretary General as well as by the Security Council of the United Nations," said Loulichki before the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly.

In this regard, the ambassador recalled that "for ten years Morocco, under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, has embarked on a major project to consolidate its plural identity and respect for human dignity, and implemented ambitious reforms regarding women’s rights, human development, transitional justice and the effective exercise of political, economic, social and cultural rights for all Moroccans and throughout the national territory."

Morocco, like any rule of law, he said, respects its international obligations and provides warning and monitoring mechanisms in terms of human right as well as a legal and institutional arsenal that guarantees to all Moroccans the exercise of human rights whatever their place of residence.

Regarding the process of negotiations, Loulichki voiced hope that the other parties engage with the spirit of compromise and realism, required by Security Council resolutions, in the negotiating process and provide evidence of a real will to seek with Morocco a political solution to the Sahara issue that is acceptable to all sides.

“Today more than ever, all parties in dispute must show their determination to move forward, to engage with seriousness and responsibility in the process of negotiations under UN auspices,” he added.

Morocco hopes to normalize and develop its friendly and cooperation relations with Algeria in the interest of both peoples and the entire Maghreb region," Loulichki said.
