Tanzanian Foreign Minister declared that understanding the Sahara issue depends on knowledge of the history of colonization in Morocco

Mr. Khalihenna Ould Rachid, chairman of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS) received on Monday at the Council headquarters in Rabat, Mr. Bernard Kamillius Membe, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Tanzania, who is currently visiting Morocco, carrying a letter by Tanzanian President to HM. King Mohammed VI. 





Corcas chairman, made during the interview, a presentation on the history of the Sahara conflict, the historical role of Morocco in the African Continent, in addition to the development of the Sahara issue, the impossibility to hold a self-determination referendum based on identification as well as prospects for settlement, made by the Moroccan initiative granting autonomy to the Sahara region. The initiative was described by the UN as "serious and credible". The UN has made this initiative the basis of a negotiated solution to end the conflict over the Sahara.

Following the end of his talks with the Council’s chairman, Foreign Minister of Tanzania said that understanding the Sahara issue depends on knowledge of the history of colonization in Morocco

"Careful examination of the present reality of the Sahara, and the political situation in the region, Morocco and the relationship with neighboring countries, and their role in the conflict, in addition to the history of Spanish colonization of the southern provinces and northern Morocco, all of this are very important, I forward it to the African Union and to my country Tanzania, to see if there is ways to change our current positions"

This interview took place in presence of Dr. Maouelainin Ben Khalihenna Maouelainin, Corcas Secretary General.

It is worth mentioning that the Tanzanian minister met Sunday with his Moroccan counterpart, Mr. Taeb Fassi Fihri, to whom he handed the letter from President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete to His Majesty King Mohammed VI.  

He expressed after this interview, the will of his country to strengthen cooperative relations between Tanzania and Morocco, notably through the opening of diplomatic representation of the Kingdom in Tanzania.

Through this meeting, I was able to form an accurate view about the Sahara, and the political situation in the region, as well as Morocco’s relationship with neighbouring countries and its role in the conflict, in addition to the history of Spanish colonization in the southern and northern regions of Morocco. All of this very is important; I will forward it to the African Union and to Tanzania.
