Algeria, defender of self-determination, does not hesitate to violate the basic rights of people sequestered in Tindouf camps for three decades, denounced on Tuesday before the 12th session of the UN Council of Human Rights (UNCHR), Ambassador Permanent Representative of Morocco to the UN Office at Geneva, Mr. Omar Hilale.

Responding to the Algerian ambassador who repeatedly raised during this session, "the right to self-determination," Mr. Hilale said that Algeria should give these people the right to self-determination on their willingness to leave the camps.

"Once again, Algeria persists in its determination against Morocco," the Moroccan diplomat denounced, lamenting that there is not a single day without the Algerian ambassador repeating his anti-Moroccan philippics.

The Moroccan ambassador pointed out, regarding the allegations of the Algerian ambassador who claimed that Algeria is a "neighbor" and "observer" country in the Sahara conflict, that neither the actions of the Algerian diplomacy, nor its daily statements confirm this claim.

Algerian diplomacy is mono-causal and its only priority is the Sahara, said Hilale who cites as evidence the fact that the Algerian ambassador has not approached any other situation in the world since the beginning of this session of the UNHRC.

"His only concern, if not only obsession is Morocco and even the Palestinian issue has been allowed only two words in his crusade for human rights," he said.

He said that Algeria that its ambassador presents it as a "neighboring country" houses, trains and funds separatists who threaten peace and security in the region, and some elements had dealings with the terrorists of Al Qaeda.

"Moreover, instead of devoting its resources to its own socio-economic, housing, health, access to water and electricity issues, the country finances the arming of the Polisario movement and its leaders around the world," noted Mr. Hilale.

Contrary to the claims of its ambassador, Algeria is not a mere observer country. It is involved in the Sahara issue since its beginning, said the Moroccan diplomat, adding that a country observer does not lead on a daily basis a diplomatic campaign hostile to Morocco, does not interfere in the negotiations and respects the responsibility of Security Council in its efforts to resolving this problem.

Regarding the reports of international NGOs on "the situation of human rights in the Moroccan Sahara" evoked by the Algerian Ambassador, Mr. Hilale has indicated clearly that these NGOs and their reports are only welcome to the Algerian ambassador when he wants to present them as so-called evidence, but when these reports expose the situation of human rights in his own country, they are ignored and these NGOs are banned, fought and denied access on Algerian soil.

The Ambassador of Morocco asserted, on the other hand, that the alleged protests in the south of Morocco exist only in the media paid by Algiers and in the mind of the Algerian ambassador, noting that cities that the Algerian diplomat quoted are regularly visited by NGOs, journalists and foreign diplomats accredited in Rabat.

Mr. Hilale said the Algerian ambassador "would have rather been better advised by reading the reports of NGOs such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, International Federation of Human Rights, the UN Committee on Human Rights and the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances on the situation of human rights in Algeria which make all a bleak picture of violations of human rights in this country. "

"The Algerian ambassador became fixated on the so-called demonstrations in the Moroccan Sahara. It would have been more appropriate on reflecting on the ban on demonstrations imposed on the Algerian people for years," said Hilale , noting in this connection that peaceful protests in Morocco are allowed as they comply with existing regulations.
