Khalihenna Mr. Ould Rachid, Chairman of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS), received on Monday, September 14, 2009, Mr. Alberto Van Klaaveren, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Chile, at the Council headquarters in Rabat.



At this meeting Corcas chairman presented to his Chilean host the latest developments in the Sahara issue, particularly in light of the Moroccan autonomy initiative and the momentum that this proposal raised, allowing the launch of the negotiation process .

The visit of the High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. Antonio Guteres in Morocco, and the situation in the Tindouf camps, were also mentioned by Corcas chairman and Secretary of State of Chile.

This meeting was attended by Dr. Maouelainin Benkhalihenna Maouelainin, Corcas Secretary General, and Mghizlate Moulay Ahmed, Corcas member.

Mr. Alberto Van Klaaveren, performs a three day working visit in Morocco.

Mr. Klaaveren  said in a statement to the press following his talks with the chairman of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs, that the Moroccan initiative derives its spirit from the experiences of some European countries.  

After saying that the meeting was an appropriate opportunity to review the developments witnessed by the file recently, and in particular informal meeting held recently in Vienna, Mr. Klaaveren expressed belief that the work would continue in the framework of the United Nations while "taking into account all parties to find a solution to this problem" .  

The Chilean official highlighted that during this meeting, discussions focused on a range of issues of bilateral cooperation, particularly in the areas of agriculture and fishing, expressing hope to enhance cooperation relations between both countries to serve their interests.  

He added that Morocco and Chile, that are undertaking political consultations, share identical views in international forums on many international and regional issues

During our visit to Morocco we discussed latest developments of the Sahara issue. We are very happy with the meeting which was held this time in Austria in order to reach an end to this conflict in the framework of the United Nations.
