Morocco's initiative to grant substantial autonomy to its southern provinces, the Sahara, is "open and fair", Liberia's Vice President, Joseph N. Boakai, said here Friday.

Following a meeting with Chairman of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS), Khelihenna Ould Errachid, Mr. Boakai reiterated his country's stance in support of the "right side (Morocco)", adding that Liberia backs Morocco's efforts to reach a just solution to the three-decade long Sahara issue.

"We have to work to ensure the unity of the African continent and not its division", the Liberian official said.

Boakai, who described relations between the two countries as "excellent", underlined that "Morocco was very supportive to Liberia especially during crisis periods."

He also pointed to the large number of young Liberians currently pursuing their training in Morocco in different fields that are of "strategic" importance to their country.

Boakai, who is leading a delegation including notably Vice Foreign Minister William Bill, held earlier in the day talks with Prime Minister, Abbas El Fassi.

Statement:

This initiative is open and fair. We have in Africa to work to ensure the unity of the continent, instead of encouraging divisions between nations.
