The 15th summit of the Non Aligned Movement (NAM), which ended its mmeting on Thursday in Egypt, confirmed NAM’s positive trend regarding the Sahara issue. Such a progress was initiated by the previous meeting, held in Cuba.

In Havana, the Non Aligned had already dismissed "any reference to provisions whose applicability has been duly established and largely confirmed outdated character» about the Sahara issue, said the Moroccan delegation, in a statement, published at the end of the Summit.

Now, the NAM entered its final approach in complete consistency with the developments in this regard within the United Nations, since the submission by the Kingdom of its autonomy initiative.

Two factors enhance the developments in the NAM position on the Sahara issue.

First, the Movement embodies the latest resolutions of the Security Council as a framework for resolving the regional differences, noting "the efforts made since 2006, recognizing that the initiative of the Kingdom of Morocco, described as serious and credible , is the basis of the current momentum and is a fundamental element of the current negotiation process.

On the other hand, the NAM Summit expands the concept of self-determination, recognizing the validity of all options, including autonomy. Accordingly, the Non Aligned Movement rejects oriented limitation of the principle of self determination to the single instrument of the referendum.

In addition, the Non-Aligned "welcomed" the holding of 4 rounds of negotiations in New York.

Thus, contrary to what has been published by Polisario’s propaganda, there is no change in the position of the Non-Aligned Movement over the Sahara issue, except the improvement of the position already in force at the 14th Summit in Havana, from 27 to 30 April 2009. Neither Polisario nor the so-called SADR are members of this movement. The Polisario Front is not recognized either as observer or as an associated organization.

It is worth mentioning that the Egyptian authorities expelled two members of the Polisario from the preparatory meetings of the Summit, held from 11 to 14 July. These two persons Ysslem Beissat and Mohamed Hamdi Boiha entered Egyptian territory with Algerian passports.

Founded in 1955 at the Bandung Conference, the NAM includes nearly two-thirds of UN members, mainly developing countries, and represents 55 pc of the global population.
