Several U.S. congressmen urged on Thursday the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to strengthen the negotiations process on the basis of the Moroccan autonomy initiative in the Sahara qualified by the Security Council as "serious" and "credible".

An international NGO denounced the instrumentalization by Algeria of the Sahara conflict to serve its strategic interests, urging the UN Security Council to stop human rights violations in Tindouf camps (south-western Algeria).

The media blockade imposed on the populations sequestered in Tindouf camps is, meant to hide the development in the Kingdom’s southern provinces and the relevance of the content of the autonomy initiative, said on Sunday, M . Ahmed Bamba Al-Hafed who joined the mother country a month ago.  

It is high time for the Security Council to adopt the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco to put an end to the suffering endured by the population held against their will in Tindouf camps, Former senior polisario leader Ahmadou Ould Souilem said.

The Moroccan autonomy plan is the only realistic proposal on the table that would provide a viable future for the people of the Sahara and meet the international community's requirements, vice-president of the Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA) said on Wednesday.
