In the context of the French Republic President Emmanuel Macron's announcement of France's support for Moroccan sovereignty over its Sahara, French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati welcomed "a historic day for Franco-Moroccan relations".

France's new position in support of Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara will have a major impact on the way the issue is handled by the UN Security Council, says Mohammed Loulichki, Senior Fellow at the think tank Policy Center for the New South (PCNS).

France's support for Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara is a happy event in bilateral relations, said Roger Karoutchi, Senator and Vice-Chairman of the France-Morocco Friendship Group in the French Senate.

The France-Morocco interparliamentary group of friendship in the French Senate welcomed on Thursday the decision of the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

In a message to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, French President, His Excellency Mr. Emmanuel Macron, officially informs the Sovereign that he “considers that the present and future of Western Sahara lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty,” the Royal Office said in a statement on Tuesday.
