The Republic of Cape Verde considers the Moroccan initiative aiming at granting broad autonomy for the Sahara region as the basis of negotiations for a final settlement of this conflict having lasted too long, reiterating its belief in the virtue of dialogue and consultation as means of conflicts settlement.



In a joint press release at the end of the two days works of the first session of the Joint Morocco-Cape Verde Cooperation Committee, co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr. Taib Fassi Fihri and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Communities of Cape Verde, Mr. Jose Brito, the Cape Verde party regretted the stagnation of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) and estimated that this inertia penalizes the aspirations of the Maghreb peoples, pleading for a better economic and political integration in the African continent and particularly in the North African region.

The two parties also renewed the firm commitment of their countries to the principles of law and international legality, particularly those relating to sovereignty and States territorial integrity safeguarding.

In a speech at the closing ceremony, which was marked by the signature of several cooperation agreements, the head of Cape Verde diplomacy, Mr. Jose Brito, said that the return of Morocco to the African Union is a necessity, stressing the need to meet all the conditions for this return.

The Cape Verde Minister said that his country is ready to provide the necessary assistance, at the African Union level, in order to create the adequate conditions so that Morocco recovers its status within the continental organization.

"The Moroccan initiative aiming at granting a broad autonomy for the Sahara region is a good proposal which will contribute in breaking the deadlock, "said Jose Brito.

In a statement to the press, at the end of the meeting, the Cape Verde official reminded that the joint cooperation committee constitutes a general framework for a cooperation in various fields between the two countries, both in terms of maritime transport, investments or tourism, hoping that Morocco supports, thanks to its experience, the Republic of Cape Verde, particularly in terms of energy and investment in this field.

For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr. Taib Fassi Fihri, indicated to the press that this session opens a new page in bilateral relations, as the results of this first session of the joint committee have been positive and offer new prospects for cooperation with Cape Verde.

The Minister reminded, furthermore, that the Cape Verde Head of State reiterated his request for the reintegration of Morocco in the African Union, stressing that Morocco continues to play an important role at the continental, bilateral and regional levels in all cooperation processes between African countries and others.
