Sahara dispute obliges Sahrawis on Algerian soil to live humiliation

Ms. Gajmoula Bint Abi member of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs said Friday evening , October 6, 2006 before the Fourth Committee of the United Nations in New York that the Sahara conflict mortgages the future of Arab Maghreb and obliges Sahrawis who are over the Algerian territory to live humiliated.

Ms. Gajmoula said "Over three decades have passed now since the beginning of one of the most difficult conflicts of contemporary history, whose devastating effects mortgage the future of the peoples of the Maghreb and oblige Saharans to live in humiliation on the Algerian territory and under the grip of Polisario leadership. "

Having mentioned the obstacles set by Algeria and Polisario in front of all peace initiatives, Ms. Gajmoula Bent Abbi explained that "Morocco, respecting international legitimacy, proposed to grant broad powers to the Sahara inhabitants in order to handle their own within the framework of national sovereignty and territorial integrity" of the Kingdom, adding that "this proposal was agreed by the various partisan and cultural components of the Moroccan society.»

She highlighted that "in this context, the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs was created," with powers concerning issues relating to the South, territorial integrity, economic, social and cultural development. It also reflects the position of Sahrawis before the international organizations and bodies with a view to clarifying the accuracy of the cause of our territorial unity.

She explained that "the primary task of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs is currently to examine autonomy project in the southern regions, which is a key point for the final settlement of the conflict in the Sahara. This manner in handling the case is a model for dealing with conflicts in a democratic and transparent way," adding that " for the Council, autonomy in the southern regions concerns all Sahrawis, including those in Tindouf, and seeks to ensure economic and social development in the region under Moroccan sovereignty and territorial and national unity."

In this regard, Ms. Gajmoula Bent Abbi said that "contrary to what is said by the Polisario and Algeria, the initiative of self-government is not delay manoeuvre to waste time of the international community, but it is is mainly aimed at ensuring a better future and a dignified and stable life for all citizens of the Sahara."

In this context, she stressed that "the involvement of the Advisory Council in thinking, and approving autonomy in the Sahara in the context of national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Morocco will certainly not be accepted by Polisario leaders and those who stand behind them in Algeria, especially since the separatist organization knows serious domestic problems and self-management inability. "

On the other hand,  Ms Gajmoula Bent Abi condemned the suffering of families living in the Tindouf camps particularly that "any dissent or objection is dealt with through repression by Polisario." This led "thousands of Saharans to leave Tindouf camps to escape physical and moral repression and persecution by Polisario which receives instructions from the Algerian military security. "

Ms. Gajmoula warned in this regard that the "lack of understanding between the parties to the dispute could threaten the fragile cease-fire which may have dire consequences on the whole area of North Africa."
