Romanian president, Traian Basescu, commended, on Wednesday, the Moroccan initiative to grant autonomy to the Sahara, deeming that autonomy is a just and efficient solution likely to serve the interests of the region's countries.



 Mr. Basescu, who received speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives, Mustapha Mansouri, said his country supports Morocco's request for an advanced status in its relations with the European Union, a press release of the House of Representatives said.

    Morocco and Romania, Mr. Basescu said, have significant potential that should be made profitable use of to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in the economic and commercial fields. In this regard, he called for stepping up exchange of visits between the two countries’ officials and businessmen.

    Mr. Mansouri, who is on a working visit to Romania at the head of a large delegation, also held a meeting with Romanian Prime Minister, Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, on means to consolidate bilateral cooperation. The two parties hailed the special bilateral relations, particularly at the parliamentary level.

       According to the press release, the Moroccan official informed Romanian Premier of the latest developments in the Sahara issue, recalling that Morocco’s autonomy initiative, which has received support from several countries, is considered as the appropriate solution to put an end to this artificial conflict and establish peace and stability in the region.
