A Sahara NGO on Wednesday submitted to Amnesty International/Morocco the files of four Moroccans reported missing in Polisario camps, southwestern Algeria, calling on the international institution to exert pressure on Algeria and Polisario to shed light on their fate.

According to a press release of the "Association des portés disparus au polisario" (APDP), these people are Soulik Mohamed (reported missing in 1979), El Ghazi El Hou Addi (1976), Bouhya Mohmed Mbarek (1977) and Ailloul Allal El Mouloud (1978).

The NGO calls for the return of the remains of the missing people to their families in case they are dead.

The Algeria-backed "Polisario" had lured in the camps in the mid seventies thousands of Sahrawis to shore up its claim to separate the Moroccan southern provinces, known as the Sahara, retrieved from Spain under the Madrid accords in 1975.

In a bid to solve the long-standing Sahara conflict, Morocco proposed early 2007 a plan to grant substantial autonomy to its southern provinces. This initiative has created a negotiations process that started last June in Manhasset. These UN-led talks continued in August and January in conformity with UN Security Council resolution 1754 that called for negotiations “without preconditions” and “in good faith.” A fourth round is slated for March 11-13.
