Members of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS) underlined, here Wednesday, that the international community has a "moral responsibility" vis-à-vis the plight of Sahrawi people held in Polisario-controlled camp of Tindouf, south western Algeria.

"Although the political aspect of the Sahara issue has been discussed widely on the international scene, the plight of Tindouf population constitutes a human tragedy, which has destroyed lives and caused sorrow but still remains largely neglected," they said at a meeting, held on the sidelines of the 6th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC).

CORCAS members called on the United Nations (UN) to play a more sustained role in bringing together Sahrawi families, highlighting discrimination, severe human rights breaches and the "the indifference of Polisario leaders who spare no efforts to maintain the status quo."

Touching on Morocco's proposal to grant substantial autonomy to its southern provinces (The Sahara) in a bid to solve the 32-year-old impasse, the participants said this proposal “will enable Sahrawi families to unite and fully enjoy their political, economic and social rights."

A former Spanish colony, the Sahara was ceded to Morocco in 1975 under the Madrid Accords. A year later, the separatist movement “Polisario”, backed by Morocco’s eastern neighbor, Algeria, started claiming independence of the territory. Since then, it continues to hold thousands of Sahrawis in the Tindouf camps against their will.
In an effort to solve the dispute, Morocco proposed autonomy to the Sahara region. The initiative was welcomed as “serious” and “credible” by several influential capitals.

In accordance with the UN Security Council resolution 1754 which called on the parties to enter negotiations “in good faith and without preconditions,” Morocco and the Polisario held two rounds of negotiations in June and August. A third round is expected, but neither date nor venue have been set so far.
