The United States reaffirmed, Thursday at the UN Security Council, its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan as a "serious, credible and realistic" solution to definitively close the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

"We continue to consider Morocco's autonomy plan as serious, credible and realistic," said Ambassador Jeffrey DeLaurentis, in an intervention following the vote by the members of the Security Council on resolution 2654 renewing until on October 31, 2023, MINURSO mandate.
The United States, the penholder of the text of the resolution, “is pleased to see the Council reaffirm its support for the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura, and for MINURSO, with the adoption of this resolution” , he pointed out.

“By this vote, the Council affirms that it fully supports the Personal Envoy in his efforts to advance a lasting and dignified resolution and facilitate a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution,” added the American diplomat who recalled his country's “firm” support for Mr. de Mistura in “his efforts to advance the political process, building on the progress of the former Personal Envoy and in accordance with relevant precedents”.

The US representative reiterated the importance for “all parties involved to dialogue in good faith” in order to advance towards a lasting solution to promote a peaceful and prosperous future in the region.

In a warning to the armed separatist militias of the Polisario, the American diplomat reiterated the call “for the restoration of freedom of movement, as well as the resumption of the safe and regular resupply of the sites of the MINURSO teams”, while expressing “the Council's deep concern over the dire situation” in the Tindouf camps.

The United Nations Security Council decided on Thursday to extend the mandate of MINURSO for one year, while once again confirming the pre-eminence of the Moroccan autonomy initiative to end the regional dispute over the Sahara.

In this new resolution, the UN executive body reaffirmed its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented by Morocco in 2007, as a serious and credible basis capable of putting an end to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, as enshrined in Security Council resolutions.
