In a statement to the MAP, M. Mohamed Ould Sid Bashir, a member of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS), said that although it is not a surprise, Walsum’s statements go in the right direction, adopted by major world powers.
For his part, Mr. Lamziliki Ali, chairman of the Corcas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Cooperation said that the statements by the UN head are the result of efforts by Morocco at different levels, including the diplomatic level, and its faith in international legality to defend its sovereignty over its southern provinces.
He also stressed that the current negotiations with Polisario will not lead to a result, given that the separatists have, actually, no decision-making and remain completely subject to Algeria, forming the hope that the Council's position will evolve in this direction through the adoption of resolutions that would embody international legality and get the issue out of the impasse.
Mr. Lamziliki has also called on the international community to work towards lifting the blockade imposed on the sequestered people in Tindouf whose humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate.
For his part, Cheikh El Ouali Khairi, on behalf of the Rguibat tribe and chairman of the Amgala commune, said that statements by Van Walsum unveiled a reality faced by many Polisario leaders and their supporters, even if they refuse to recognize it as truth, namely the Moroccan historical, geographical and religious sovereignty over its southern provinces.
The only solution to this artificial conflict around the Moroccan Sahara, he said, is the Moroccan initiative to grant a status of enlarged autonomy to the southern provinces within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.
