Burkina Faso welcomed, before the United Nations Committee of 24, the investments made by Morocco in favor of the populations of the Moroccan Sahara within the framework of the new development model launched in 2015 which made it possible to empower the inhabitants of this region. 


In his speech, the Ambassador Permanent Representative of Burkina Faso to the UN, Eric Tiare, stressed that his country “congratulates Morocco for the efforts and achievements in the fight against the Covid 19 pandemic, in particular in through the vaccination campaign which allowed broad access of populations to the anti-Covid vaccine ”, including in the Moroccan Sahara region.


He also affirmed that Burkina Faso reaffirms its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, for which the Security Council welcomed the serious and credible efforts of Morocco, considering that it constitutes “a credible and realistic alternative in the outcome of this dispute “.


Indeed, added Mr. Tiare, the Moroccan autonomy initiative is in accordance with international law, the Charter of the United Nations and the resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly.


And to stress in this regard that Burkina Faso is “particularly attentive to the resolution of this dispute, because it is convinced, as reaffirmed in particular in resolutions 2414, 2440, 2468, 2494 and 2548 of the Security Council, that A political solution to this long-standing dispute and to enhanced cooperation between the member states of the Arab Maghreb Union, would undoubtedly contribute to stability and security in the Sahel region ”.


The Burkinabese diplomat also indicated that his country welcomes Morocco’s respect for the ceasefire following the events in the Guergarate area and the peaceful action taken by Morocco to definitively restore the free movement of people and goods.


“My country takes the opportunity to call on all the other parties to respect the ceasefire, so as not to strike a blow at the efforts of the Secretary General of the United Nations aimed at reaching a political solution to the issue. “, he said, specifying that it is at stake for the security and the stability of the whole region especially since like other countries, Burkina Faso has opened a consulate general in Dakhla.


Tiare thus reaffirmed his country’s support for the ongoing political process, carried out under the exclusive aegis of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and which aims to reach a political, realistic, pragmatic, lasting and compromise solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara, as recommended by the 17 Security Council resolutions since 2007.


In this regard, Burkina Faso is very pleased with the notable progress recorded during the two Round Tables held in Geneva and bringing together Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and the “Polisario” and also marked by the participation of elected representatives of the Moroccan Sahara. , he said, while welcoming the participation of these elected officials in C24 meetings and regional seminars.


“In view of the positive results of these Round Tables, Burkina is impatient to see the next Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and successor of Kohler, resume as soon as he is appointed, the negotiations where they left off, on the occasion. discussions to come at the third round table, which we sincerely welcome, ”the Ambassador said.


Burkina Faso welcomes the Security Council’s request made to the four parties to remain engaged, throughout the duration of the process so that it leads to the great satisfaction of all, he concluded.
