The United Nations Security Council welcomed, on Friday, the new impetus given by the round tables between Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario, thus endorsing these round tables as the only process aimed at achieving a consensual political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

In its resolution N° 2548, the UN executive body thus welcomed the new impetus given by the two round tables on the Sahara issue, held in December 2018 and in March 2019 in Geneva on the initiative of the former Personal envoy of the UN Secretary General, Horst Köhler, while commending Morocco's "commitment" to be part of the UN political process in "a serious and respectful manner".

While calling for the appointment of a new Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Sahara, the Security Council encourages, in this regard, "the resumption of consultations between the next Personal Envoy" and the parties in this regional dispute, namely Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario.

The Council thus expressed its "full support for the ongoing efforts of the Secretary-General and his next Personal Envoy to maintain the renewed process of negotiations in order to reach a solution to the Sahara issue".

The resolution also notes that the former Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Sahara had agreed with Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario to hold a new meeting "on the same format" as the two round tables of Geneva.

The Council also called on the next Personal Envoy to build on the progress made by his predecessor in the round-table process and, therefore, to start where Mr. Horst Köhler left off.

The Security Council welcomed "the will of Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario to remain committed, throughout this process, in a spirit of realism and compromise, in order to to ensure its success".

The resolution also calls for showing political will and working in an atmosphere conducive to dialogue with the aim of advancing talks, thereby ensuring the implementation of Security Council resolutions since 2007.
