The Arab Lawyers Union (ALU) reiterated Monday night, its firm belief regarding the Moroccanity of the Sahara.

The ALU position was reaffirmed at the end of the second 2007 session of the Union’s Standing Committee, meeting in Cairo.

The ALU was the first organization to acknowledge the Sahara as an integral part of Moroccan territory. This same deep conviction that the Arab Lawyers repeat since their 2nd congress in 1975 in Baghdad, "said the Union’s general secretary Mr. Ibrahim Semlali, in a statement to the MAP on the sidelines of the session.

In November 2006, at a meeting in Marrakesh, the ALU permanent office expressed its support to the Kingdom’s territorial integrity, underlying the need to restore the freedom of movement of populations sequestered in the Tindouf camps and find a political solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.

With regard to the issue of Sebta and Melillia, Mr. Semlali said that the members of the permanent office stated that both occupied cities is part of Moroccan territory and that Spain "tries to get profit from the situation."

In addition, ALU Standing Committee members unanimously decided to convene late January or early February on the Morocco-algerian border, a sit-in protest against the closure of borders by Algerians,  he said.

This closure is the result of "inhumane position, more damaging for Algerians than Moroccans'," said Semlali.
