The Spanish Congress of Deputies (lower house of Parliament) on Tuesday unanimously adopted a motion calling for a "just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution" to the Sahara issue.

The motion, adopted by all parliamentary groups represented in the Congress of Deputies, also calls on the Spanish government to "continue to promote the process of dialogue established within the UN" between the parties to achieve a "just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution" to the Sahara issue.

The Spanish political parties stress that this solution must be within the framework of "successive UN resolutions".

Spain, through its minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Arancha González Laya, reiterated on 24 January in Rabat that her country defends the centrality of the United Nations in the search for a solution to this regional dispute within the framework of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

Spain's stance on the Sahara issue is "a State position that does not depend on changes in governments or coalitions," she said.
