The UN Security Council on Wednesday decided to extend by one year MINURSO's mandate, reaffirming anew the pre-eminence of the Moroccan autonomy initiative to settle the artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.

The Security Council has decided to extend MINURSO's mandate until 31 October 2020, says resolution N° 2494, which was adopted by a large majority. The executive body of the United Nations has enshrined, once again, the pre-eminence of the autonomy initiative, presented by Morocco on April 11, 2007, commending "the serious and credible efforts" of Morocco through its autonomy initiative. The resolution underlines, once again, that Algeria is a main party in the political process on the Sahara issue. The text also underscores the need to achieve "a realistic, practical and sustainable political solution" to the Sahara issue, "on the basis of compromise". In this regard, the resolution calls for "resuming talks between the next personal envoy" of the UN Chief for the Sahara and the parties to the regional dispute, namely Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and Polisario. It also underlines the need for the parties to advance the political process led by the UN secretary general and to show "realism and a spirit of compromise to move forward" in the talks. The resolution calls for showing political will and working in an atmosphere conducive to dialogue, thus ensuring the implementation of Security Council resolutions since 2007, which corresponds to the date of the submission by Morocco of its autonomy initiative. The Security Council underlines, in this regard, that a "political solution to this long-standing dispute and the strengthening of cooperation amongst Arab Maghreb Union member states would contribute to stability and security, which will boost the creation of jobs, growth and opportunities for all the peoples of the Sahel region."
