Cameroon underlined Tuesday before the Fourth Committee of the United Nations in New York, the need for "a pragmatic approach of openness and compromise, with a view to reaching a consensual and final solution" to the Moroccan Sahara issue.

Speaking on this occasion, Cameroon's permanent representative to the UN, Tommo Monthe, said his country, like many others, "remains convinced that negotiation is the key that can help achieve a situation of peace in this part of the Maghreb".

"With this in mind, my country has constantly called on all the concerned parties to engage resolutely in a pragmatic approach of openness and compromise, with a view to reaching a consensual and final solution to the dispute", the Cameroonian ambassador pointed out.

In this regard, Monthe welcomed the convening in Geneva of two round tables on the Sahara issue, with the participation of Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and Polisario.

He also recalled that "the Security Council has underlined in the resolution No 2468 that the political solution to this long-standing dispute and the enhanced cooperation between the Member States of the Arab Maghreb Union would contribute to stability and security in the Sahel region, as well as to the consolidation of the unity of our Continent.
