Togo highlighted, on Wednesday before the 4th United Nations Committee in New York, Morocco's efforts for development in the Sahara and its actions to promote human rights in the region.

"My delegation would like to take note of Morocco's efforts aimed at the development of the Sahara region, particularly through the implementation of socio-economic projects, and to commend the strengthening of actions meant to ensure and protect human rights in the region", said the representative of Togo before the Committee. In addition, the Togolese diplomat praised the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his former Personal Envoy to find a political solution to the conflict in the Moroccan Sahara, which provided "momentum for the political process, through round-table meetings" with the participation of all parties. In this regard, he called for "maintaining this momentum so that dialogue can never again be interrupted until the peaceful and definitive resolution" of this regional dispute. The Togolese representative recalled his country's conviction that "negotiation is the only realistic way forward to achieve lasting peace in this part of the Maghreb". In this regard, he stressed that the political solution to this long-standing dispute requires "enhanced cooperation between the member States of the Arab Maghreb Union".
