The Central African Republic renewed, on Wednesday before the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly, its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a "solution of compromise" to the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

Speaking on this occasion, the representative of the Central African Republic noted that the Kingdom of Morocco is "making commendable efforts to reach this compromise", while welcoming the holding of two round-table meetings between Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the polisario with a view to finding a "prompt political solution to this regional dispute".

"We take this opportunity to recall the importance of realism and a spirit of compromise in reaching a definitive political solution, and we support Morocco's willingness to resolve this regional dispute," the Central African diplomat stressed.

"'The Moroccan autonomy initiative is a solution of compromise," he said, noting that it "takes into account the specificities of the region, follows the logic of compromise and meets international standards for the devolution of power to local populations".

"Several workshops on the (autonomy) initiative have proven that the Moroccan model is more reliable and paves the way for a credible solution," he pointed out.

In addition, the representative of the Central African Republic praised Morocco's launch in 2015 of the new development model for the Sahara, worth $8 billion "to improve the living standards of the population of the Sahara and empower it by benefiting from the region's resources", while noting the Kingdom's "substantial achievements" in the field of human rights, citing in particular Morocco’s interaction with relevant international mechanisms and the role of the regional commissions of the National Human Rights Council in Laayoune and Dakhla.

The Central African Republic also expressed its "serious concern" about human rights violations in the Tindouf camps, calling for the registration of populations in these camps in accordance with international humanitarian law, the mandate of the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the recommendations of the UN Secretary-General and all Security Council resolutions since 2011.

Furthermore, the Central African Republic "fully" supports the political process conducted under the exclusive aegis of the United Nations on the basis of the resolutions adopted by the Security Council since 2007 to reach a "realistic, pragmatic and lasting" political solution to the question of the Moroccan Sahara based on compromise.
