In the advanced copy of his latest report to the Security Council on the Moroccan Sahara, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that president of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki, has assured his Special Envoy for the Sahara of his support for UN efforts to resolve this dispute.

The report also points out that Faki informed Personal Envoy Horst Köhler about the mechanism established at the July 2018 AU Nouakchott Summit. The latter, in the form of a Troika composed of the outgoing, current and incoming AU presidents, as well as the chairperson of the Commission, was established by Decision 693, with the objective of "providing effective support to the efforts led by the United Nations".

This confirms the UN's exclusivity of the political process on the Moroccan Sahara. The support for the UN process expressed by the chairperson of the AU Commission and reiterated by the UN Secretary-General, reinforces the position expressed by 38 African countries, almost three quarters of the AU members, who have reaffirmed the exclusivity of the United Nations as the sole framework for seeking a mutually acceptable, realistic, pragmatic and sustainable political solution to the question of the Moroccan Sahara, which is based on compromise, at the African ministerial Conference on African Union support to the United Nations political process on the regional dispute over the Sahara, held in Marrakech on 24 March 2019.
