In the advanced copy of his report to the Security Council on the Moroccan Sahara, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted the extensive discussions between Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the "polisario" during the 1st and 2nd Geneva round Table discussions on how to achieve a political, realistic, pragmatic and sustainable solution based on compromise, in accordance with Security Council resolution 2440.

In this document, Guterres stressed the positive spirit and constructive and respectful atmosphere of the round Table discussions in Geneva, in the full and complete presence, during all meetings, of all the parties concerned (Morocco, Algeria, polisario and Mauritania).

He said that the Geneva round Table discussions had brought together participants with diverging views to agree on a new path through dialogue.

In the same vein, the Secretary-General affirmed the importance of the round Table discussions process and praised the agreement of all delegations to continue the process and to meet again in the same format, calling on all parties to continue to seek compromise.

Algeria is called upon to engage fully and throughout the process, in accordance with its political, historical and legal responsibility in the dispute and with the resolutions of the Security Council, in particular resolution 2440 of October 2018.

The Secretary-General's report contains no reference to obsolete, inapplicable and unrealistic plans that have been definitively buried by the United Nations. In this way, it enshrines the realistic, pragmatic and lasting political solution based on compromise as the only way to resolve the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. These are terms that clearly identify with the Moroccan autonomy initiative, whose pre-eminence, seriousness and credibility have been recognized by the Security Council in all its resolutions since 2007.

The Report also stressed that the political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara will be beneficial for the entire region, which has a special responsibility in this regard.
