In his address to the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, Mr. Nasser Bourita said that "at a time when the international community is encouraging a political settlement based on consensus and realism and where the Moroccan autonomy plan in the Sahara is receiving growing support from the concert of nations as a serious, credible and realistic solution, it is up to the other parties to this regional conflict to assume their responsibilities and to cease to exist, use  double language to finally register with seriousness and constructive spirit in the political process under the aegis of the United Nations ".

Addressing the situation in the Maghreb, Mr Bourita noted that this part of the world is going through a difficult economic situation due to the lack of political coordination, weak economic integration and fragile security cooperation, exacerbation of the Libyan crisis and intensification of security threats.

He underlined that Morocco reiterated its readiness to work, in a sincere and determined manner, with the Secretary - General of the United Nations and his new personal envoy, Horst Kohler, with a view to a final political settlement, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty and its territorial integrity.

The Kingdom is continuing its efforts to revitalize the development model of the southern provinces and implement a wider regionalization in order to guarantee the populations of the Moroccan Sahara to manage their own affairs in a democratic and stable framework, from the dangers of separatism, balkanization, extremism and international terrorism.

The Minister also deplored the dramatic situation faced by the people of Tindouf camps, reiterating their appeal to the international community to exert pressure on the host country to respect its international commitments and allow the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to register these populations in accordance with Security Council resolutions and in response to repeated calls by the UN Secretary-General.

Regarding the African Union, its institutional family, the minister considers that "The return of Morocco to its African institutional family in January 2017 is a responsible decision that has not been dictated by opportunism of circumstance, in so far as this return was the crowning achievement of a strategic journey backed up by an insightful Royal vision devoting a strong sense of pride and belonging to Africa. "

The Minister stresses that the Kingdom of Morocco will work in this direction to contribute positively and dynamically in the ongoing discussions on the reforms of the African Union and the development of a structure and working methods that will enable to address the multiple challenges facing the African continent,"said Mr. Bourita. In that regard, he said that the Kingdom was strongly committed to the efforts to make the AU a strong partner of the United Nations.
