The Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee of the Brazilian Senate welcomed on Monday evening the adoption of resolution 2351 on the Sahara by the UN Security Council end of April.

Calling on neighboring States, in particular Algeria, to cooperate fully with a view to reaching a political solution to this regional dispute.

Speaking at the opening of a public hearing on the benefits of Brazil's economic opening to the world, Fernando Collor de Mello, chairman of the Committee, read out a statement stressing the relevance of the Moroccan autonomy and expressing support for Morocco's "serious and credible" efforts to reach a just, lasting, negotiated and mutually acceptable political solution to this dispute.

"The UN resolution expresses its support for the serious and credible efforts made by Morocco and reiterates the primacy of the Moroccan initiative, which seeks to offer a broad autonomy to the Sahara region within the framework of national sovereignty and territorial integrity ", underlined the president of the senatorial commission.

Mentioning the main lines of this resolution, which seeeks  "to get rid of all that is impracticable and unfeasible" in order to find a solution "guided by the parameters of realism and the spirit of compromise", the senator highlighted the outcome of the referendum option, which is nowhere mentioned in the UN resolution.

"The resolution does not mention the option of the referendum in any way. The Security Council resolution emphasizes the regional dimension of the conflict by calling on neighboring countries, mainly Algeria, to cooperate fully and closely with the United Nations and to invest more to end the stalemate and move towards a political solution, "he said.

The text also highlights the United Nations Executive Body's recognition of the measures taken by Morocco to strengthen human rights in the region, as well as the work of the commissions of the National Council of Human Rights, (CNDH) in Laâyoune and Dakhla.

Mr. Collor also stressed that the Security Council resolution highlighted the geopolitical context of the region, marked by the security risks in a particularly fragile area and under the increasing influence of terrorist groups and drug.

This public hearing of the Brazilian Senate Committee was attended by the Chair of the Committee on External Relations and National Defense of the Chamber of Deputies, Bruna Furlan, as well as parliamentarians from both chambers of the National Congress and diplomats , Including the Ambassador of Morocco to Brazil, Nabil Adghoghi.
