In his latest report on the Sahara, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Monday to members of the UN Security Council his intention to relaunch the process of negotiations on the basis of realism and compromise with new momentum and  new spirit in order to reach a mutually acceptable political solution to the Sahara issue, in accordance with Security Council resolutions.

In this report, Mr. Guterres recommended the extension of the Minurso mandate until April 30, 2018.

The report refers to Morocco's decision to authorize the return of 17 civilian officials from Minurso and its cooperation with the United Nations to finalize the case.

The Secretary-General referred to several passages in His Majesty King Mohammed VI's speech commemorating the 41st anniversary of the Green March 6, 2016, in which the Sovereign said that "our Southern Provinces are strong by the attachment of their inhabitants to their homeland and political system of their country ".

In this Royal address, Mr Guterres continued, the Sovereign welcomed the fact that the southern provinces, thanks to their development model and projects launched, became "an integral development pole acting in its regional and continental environment, and an axis for economic cooperation between Morocco and its African depth ".

Moreover, the report goes back to the parliamentary elections October 7, 2016, stressing that this consultation was held "without incident".
