Khalihenna: autonomy puts Polisario in a bind

Al Zaman: The chairman of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs, Mr. Khalihenna Ould Errachid said, during the special session of the Council that the autonomy proposal for the Southern provinces meets the requirements of international legality adding that the Council’s members unanimously voted for the proposal after transparent and deep discussions.

Errachid added that the proposal aimed at maintaining all the features of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara while ensuring everything concerning political, economic, social and cultural rights of Sahrawi people. He also expressed his belief that the proposal will be supported by all Sahrawis including those in Tindouf camps because, according to the Council’s chairman, it ensures their dignity and respects their rights, customs, traditions and history, pointing out that the autonomy of the southern provinces is a modern, democratic, revolutionary and integrated option fully in line with the International standards.

Ould Errachid explained that autonomy would place Polisario in trouble since “they do not have any alternative to present contrary to Morocco, which has now a project constituting a final solution satisfactory to all parties. The head of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs said that Algeria, which claims not be a party in the Sahara issue, "does not have the right to accept or reject autonomy plan for the Southern provinces".
He added that Algeria "is in contradiction, because it claims on the one hand it is not concerned by the Saharan dispute but provides political and diplomatic assistance
to Polisario. He stressed that the European Union, through council’s contacts, showed support to the autonomy project as a unique solution that would spare the European and African continents instability risks.
