The delegation of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs, chaired by Mr. Khalihenna Ould Errachid and his accompanying delegation met on Thursday with Mr Jose Segura, Government representative as part of a tour to the Canary Islands and the Regional Government of Andalusia from 01 to 07 June, to explain the Moroccan initiative to grant the southern regions an expanded self-rule under Moroccan sovereignty, and to benefit from the Spanish experience in the application of the expanded system of self-government.


During the meeting, the chairman of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs Mr. Khalihenna Ould Errachid briefed Mr. Government representative about the positive results of his talks with his deputy, Ms. Carolina Darias, and raised the following points:

- The Royal Council was established by His Majesty the King
- The main objective of the Council to find final solution to the Sahara issue
- Preparation of appropriate conditions for the application of self-government
- The prospects for future cooperation between the local government of the Sahara and the Government of the Canary Islands
- Family relations between the Sahrawi people and Canary Islands due to proximity and shared history
- The need to resolve the dispute over the Sahara, which has lasted too long
- The implications of loosing control of the Sahara and its dire consequences on neighboring countries as a whole
- Talks held by the delegation of CORCAS in Madrid with political parties trade unions and civil society organizations and institutions with a strategic international dimension
- autonomy to reduce the phenomenon of clandestine migration from sub-Saharan countries, particularly from the countries suffering civil wars and their impact on the future of the region
- Autonomy engine for local development and has effective role in the expansion of democracy and popular participation in the African continent
- The Moroccan Sahara is rich with its resources
- Consultation by the King with the political parties to participate in the formulation of self-government
- The President thanked the interest by government officials for the visit and hospitality and support received by the Moroccan delegation

Commenting on the speech of Mr. Khalihenna, Mr. Segura tackled the following themes:
- Personal interest in the Sahara issue
- Good relations with Morocco and its officials
- Belonging to Canary Islands means the Sahara issue is a special issue
- A desire to achieve peace and peace in the region
- Supporting autonomy in the Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty
- Position calling for unconditional cooperation with the Moroccan side, and Sahrawi side in particular,
- Rejection of a Republic in the Moroccan Sahara
- The interest of Spain in strong Morocco in terms of economy, politics and security
- Common issues between the Canary Islands and southern Morocco
- Secial relationship with the Polisario Front
- The problem of illegal immigration coming from sub-Saharan countries
- Inquiring about the position of the Moroccan political parties on the issue of self-government
