A delegation from the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS), is participating in the 16th session of the UN Human Rights Council, which is currently taking place in Geneva.

In a statement, CORCAS member Mghizlat Moulay Ahmed said that the delegation's participation in the main session of the Council intends to defend Morocco's plan for autonomy in order to definitively settle the Sahara conflict.

CORCAS member Maoualainine Saadani has taken part in a panel organized by some NGOs at the Palace of Nations on the sidelines of the UNHRC's session. Saadani presented the autonomy plan for the southern provinces, emphasizing that this option is vital for Sahrawis and represents a modern form of self-determination.

Self-determination is not a synonym for separatism, she said, adding that autonomy is the only just and viable solution for putting an end to the ordeal of the people held captive in Tindouf camps.

Implementing this solution will enable Sahrawis detained in the camps to return to their country, Morocco, to live there with dignity and democracy and to contribute to the development of their region, Saadani said.

Autonomy guarantees to meet Sahrawis' economic, social, political and cultural demands and achieves reconciliation, she said.

The speaker also noted that autonomy conforms to international standards, while respecting Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces.
