The Council’s Chairman, Mr. Khalihenna Ould Errachid, ruled out the possibility of holding a referendum to determine the identity proposed by Polisario and backed by the United Nations, as one of the ways to put an end to this dispute, which has lasted for thirty years, since referendum means revising "the old borders" of several states.
For this Council, the only possible solutions is the continuation of camps where residents live harshly in the desert of Algeria, or opt for Moroccan autonomy proposal that will be submitted to the United Nations next October. The proposal calls on Polisario to cooperate in its preparation, describing the front as a «dogmatic politico-military movement", but nonetheless, is taken by the international community as and the only legitimate representative of Sahrawis.
Moreover, the Council’s chairman said that talks are being held with international institutions in order to convince Polisario to accept the Moroccan solution.
